Metro Winnipeg axed in Postmedia / Torstar newspaper swap

In the world of digital communication, another traditional newspaper operation has been axed in Winnipeg.

In a deal that saw Torstar and Postmedia swap assets Metro Winnipeg, Metro Ottawa and 21 other community papers across the country will be shut.

Although most of the other papers will remain open until January 2018 the Metro in Winnipeg has printed its last edition and will lock the doors later today, November 27, 2017.

The move came as a shock to local employees who had no warning of the impending closure.

The Metro first printed in Winnipeg in 2011 and was touted as a new approach to delivering news to millennials.

Postmedia has confirmed the closures and said that nationally about 244 people will be out of work due to papers shutting down.
