Construction has kicked off for a new emergency services hub in Winnipeg’s expanding Waverley West area. The city has begun work on an interim modular station at 130 Eaglewood Dr., aimed at meeting the area’s growing needs until a permanent facility is built. Expected to house a fire engine and ambulance with paramedics, the station’s location is designed to provide quicker responses to emergencies, enhancing community safety.
Mayor Scott Gillingham stressed the city’s commitment to adapting to population growth to ensure everyone’s well-being. Evan Duncan, Chair of the Committee on Community Services, echoed this sentiment, affirming the temporary station’s necessity until a permanent solution is realized.
Tom Wallace, Deputy Chief of Support Services, highlighted the station’s versatility, noting its ability to relocate as required across the city.
With a budget of around $6.8 million, including funding from both federal and municipal sources, the project underscores a joint commitment to public safety. The province has committed to provide operating funding for the firefighters and paramedics who will work at the interim station and its eventual permanent replacement. It is scheduled for completion by 2026.
