On October 18, 2024, at 12:04 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service North District General Patrol officers responded to a report of a fire at a two-story residence in the 700 block of Flora Avenue. Officers discovered an adult male trapped in the basement of the home, which was fully engulfed in flames. Entry through the doors was impossible due to the intensity of the fire, and the basement windows had been boarded up with plywood and security bars. Officers used a shovel and an ice scraper found in the yard to remove the plywood from the window until backup arrived with breaching tools. They gained access to the basement and located the male inside, directing him through the smoke and flames towards the window to extract him. The 53-year-old victim was transported to the hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable. Two officers were treated for minor injuries at the scene. East District General Patrol Officers arrived at the scene and found a 24-year-old male victim with life-threatening injuries to his upper body. Officers provided emergency medical care, including a life-saving chest seal, before the victim was transported to the hospital in unstable condition. He has since been upgraded to stable condition but remains hospitalized. The initial investigation revealed that the victim and the suspect were together at Orange Park, near the intersection of St. Joseph Avenue and Notre Dame Street, when a physical altercation escalated, resulting in the victim being stabbed several times. The suspect fled the area before police arrived. The weapon used in the assault was located and seized by police. The suspect is described as an Indigenous male, between 20-25 years old, approximately 5’5″ in height, with long black hair worn in a ponytail, and wearing a dark hoodie and khaki pants. On October 10, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Guns and Gangs Unit conducted a traffic stop in the 700 block of Dufferin Avenue. The stop involved an adult male driver and three passengers. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the driver did not possess a valid driver’s license and was carrying an edged weapon. The Guns and Gangs Unit arrested the male driver, along with a male and two female passengers. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a cache of items, including a Remington Model 700, a loaded magazine, .22 calibre bullets, a decorative bullet belt, a black hunting knife, and various drugs. The drugs seized included 0.25 grams of crack cocaine, 2.05 grams of fentanyl, 1.00 grams of methamphetamine, and 38.8 grams of a cutting agent, along with drug packaging and paraphernalia. A 23-year-old male from Winnipeg faces multiple charges, including possession of unauthorized firearms, possession of prohibited or restricted firearms with ammunition, possession of firearms obtained by crime, and possession of scheduled substances for the purpose of trafficking. He remains in custody, while the three passengers were released without charge.
On October 7, at approximately 6:15 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of a stabbing on a Winnipeg transit bus near Portage Avenue and Valour Road. Central District General Patrol officers arrived at the scene and found a 40-year-old woman and her 16-year-old daughter with injuries from an edged weapon. The investigation revealed that three suspects on the bus initiated an unprovoked argument with the victims, which escalated to an assault involving an edged weapon. The suspects fled the area before police arrived. During the incident, the victims were also robbed of their personal belongings. Both victims were transported to the hospital, treated for their injuries, and subsequently released. The suspects are described as follows: The Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation and is working to update the description of the suspects. No arrests have been made at this time.
On September 28, 2024, at approximately 10:35 p.m., officers from the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET) in Manitoba, along with counterparts from the United States Border Patrol, responded to a border incursion approximately seven kilometres east of Emerson, Manitoba, near Road 18 East. Officers from IBET, Morris, Emerson, and St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP Detachments swiftly attended the scene and located an SUV in the area. Observing numerous individuals and luggage in the vehicle, the officers conducted a traffic stop and determined that human smuggling was taking place. Six individuals were arrested under the Customs Act, and the driver was arrested for human smuggling. All were transported to the Emerson RCMP Detachment. Among those arrested under the Customs Act were: The ages of those arrested range from 30 to 53 years old. Semere Haile, 42, from Winnipeg, was charged with human smuggling under section 117 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. He was released under several conditions and attended Winnipeg Provincial Court on October 7, 2024. The six individuals arrested under the Customs Act were handed over to the Canada Border Services Agency for processing. “Crossing the Canada and United States border between the ports of entry is not only an illegal act but a dangerous one,” stated Sergeant Lance Goldau, head of IBET in Manitoba. “For everyone’s safety, we continue to work closely with our United States counterparts to stop incursions at the border.”

Upon arrival, North District General Patrol officers found a 16-year-old male youth with life-threatening injuries from a firearm discharge at Boyd and Andrews. The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced deceased. The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation and identified the victim.
