Zebra mussels found in aquarium moss balls

Manitoba has issued an advisory about zebra mussels found in moss and algal ball products for aquariums and water gardens. Zebra Mussels are an aquatic invasive species and are prohibited in Manitoba.

Due to the risk involved with the species any moss or algal balls purchased after January 1, 2021 should be removed and treated before being thrown away.

Zebra Mussels

Zebra mussels can be as small as a grain of sand and are often found inside the moss or algal ball itself. Sue to the size it is extremely difficult to visually detect the presence of the species.

To safely treat and dispose of moss and algal balls the province suggests the follow steps be taken:

Step 1: Treat the moss or algal balls:

  • place into a plastic bag, seal and freeze (preferably in a deep freezer) for at least 24 hours; or
  • place in boiling water for at least one minute and then let cool.

Step 2: Dispose of moss or algal balls:

  • place it and any of its packaging in a sealed plastic bag and dispose in household garbage.

It is important to note that after moss or algal balls have been removed from an aquarium, do not dispose of untreated water down the drain or into any residential water system or waterbody.
