Manitoba has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the private operation of government air services.
The Air Service Branch of the provincial government is responsible for wildfire suppression, air ambulance service and general transportation using 22 government-owned aircraft.
“Our government is exploring ways to continue to provide essential provincial air services, while ensuring the same level of service, availability, safety and security for all Manitobans is maintained – if not improved upon,” said Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler.

According to the minister private carriers are used 50% of the time while maintenance on the government-owned fleet is performed. Schuler says that currently that private carriers are also used in other areas within government.
The minister said that they would be choosing the “best overall value” based on the results of the RFP.
There is no word on how many jobs may be cut, if any, with the contracting to a private operator.
