Bridge Drive Inn closes after neighbourhood backlash

Two days after opening for the season the Bridge Drive Inn (BDI) on Jubilee Avenue has closed after a backlash over the amount of traffic in the area due to the operation.

The famous ice cream spot opened on Friday, May 8, 2020, using a ‘drive-thru’ model for the first time in its 63 years of operation.

A long lineup quickly formed and began to impede residents along Jubilee Avenue by blocking driveways and back lanes.

The owners of BDI decided to close on Sunday until they can figure out a better way to do business and maintain the social distancing requirements imposed by the province.

In a post to social media, the owner Justin Jacob said: “We tried to deal with this as best we could in the drive-thru scenario anticipating that we would be able to improve efficiency as time went on.”

“We will re-evaluate and try to reopen to pedestrian traffic with social distancing measures in place,” said Jacob.

For now, the shop remains closed.
