Three Mental Health Workers Allocated to Support First Responders

In a move to bolster mental health services for first responders across Manitoba, Premier Wab Kinew announced the dedication of three mental health workers specifically tasked with supporting firefighters, paramedics, and law enforcement personnel.

“First responders are the backbone of our communities, and it’s essential that we prioritize their mental well-being,” Kinew said. “They confront traumatic situations daily, and it’s our duty to ensure they have the necessary support systems in place.”

Recognizing the toll that emergency response duties can take on mental health, David Pankratz, special envoy for military affairs, emphasized the urgent need for increased support.

“The recent loss of Winnipeg firefighter Preston Heinbigner underscores the importance of providing adequate resources for our first responders,” noted Pankratz. “Having served as a firefighter and paramedic, I understand firsthand the challenges they face. It’s imperative that we break down the stigma surrounding post-traumatic stress and facilitate access to mental health assistance.”

Kinew highlighted existing measures to support workers grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Since 2016, Manitoba’s Workers Compensation Board has provided presumptive coverage for PTSD diagnosed in workers exposed to specific traumatic events in the line of duty, offering vital assistance to those in need.

The government’s commitment to addressing the mental health needs of first responders underscores a concerted effort to prioritize the well-being of those who tirelessly serve Manitobans in times of crisis.
