Police officer assaulted by Liquor Mart thieves

An off-duty Winnipeg police officer was assaulted after he witnessed a number of suspects steal a large amount of liquor from a Dakota Street Liquor Mart.

Police say the incident happened just after 5:00 pm on Sunday February 23, 2020.

As the suspects fled the store the officer called the WPS Communications Centre and requested back-up.

The officer followed the suspects to an area near Sterling Avenue and At. Annes Road at which point he was assaulted by the suspects.

Although the suspects then fled the officer was able to capture a male suspect and hold him until assistance arrived.

The officer was then taken to hospital and treated for injuries he received during the assault.

As the investigation continued a second suspect was identified and at around 7:45 pm he was taken into custody near William Avenue and Harriet Street.

Police say that both men have been detained and charged

As the investigation continues detectives with the Major Crimes Unit are asking anyone with information that can help to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477)
