The Manitoba Wildfire Service, in collaboration with the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC), Manitoba Emergency Management Organization (EMO), and the Manitoba Fire Service, has announced that residents of communities affected by the two active fires around Flin Flon and The Pas will be allowed to return home on Sunday morning.
The fire, designated as WE010, near Flin Flon remains approximately 37,000 hectares in size. However, the fireline closest to Cranberry Portage is now under control. As a result, residents of Cranberry Portage, and the cottage subdivisions of Sourdough Bay, Whitefish Lake, Twin Lakes, and Schist Lake North have been cleared to return to their homes as of 10 a.m., Sunday, May 19. Barricades will remain in place until that time.
In addition, Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 10 and the Sherridon access road will reopen to traffic. Residents will be allowed to return to their homes at 10 a.m., Sunday, May 19. A small number of properties have been damaged by the fire, but impacted residents are being notified prior to the area reopening.
Significant resources continue to suppress fire WE010. These include six water bombers, seven helicopters, over 200 provincial personnel, 40 firefighters from Ontario, five from Parks Canada, 20 from New Brunswick arriving today, and 21 from Quebec arriving this weekend.
Provincial Emergency Social Services will be available to residents, and the reception centres at the Wescana Inn in The Pas and the Victoria Inn in Flin Flon will remain open this weekend. The collective efforts of these organizations have ensured the safety of residents and the containment of the fires.
