Batteries to blame for Central St. Boniface house fire

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a two-storey home on Rue de la Monenie in St. Boniface just after midnight on, February 24, 2020.

When firefighters arrived on scene they were greeted with heavy smoke billowing out of the structure that could be seen blanketing much of Central St. Boniface.

The residents inside the home were able to evacuate before fire crews arrived on scene after fire alarms inside the home alerted them to the fire.

The WFPS fire investigator was on scene and it appears the blaze may have been started due to improper storage of batteries.

Crews smashed out windows to vent the home and quickly got the fire contained.

The blaze was declared under control by 12:45 am.
