The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating a death a man in-custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre early Wednesday October 12, 2016.

 The IIU was notified by the Winnipeg Police Service that the affected person was taken into custody and then taken to Winnipeg Remand Centre.  During the Winnipeg Remand Centre processing procedure, a struggle ensued and the  person suffered a medical emergency and became unresponsive.  He was subsequently transported by ambulance to the Health Sciences Centre where he was pronounced deceased.

The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation and investigators were immediately deployed to the scene. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
