Manitoba Health Issues Tips to Protect Yourself in Poor Air Quality

As the wildfire season intensifies, Manitoba Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care is urging Manitobans to stay vigilant and protect themselves from the potential health risks associated with wildfire smoke.

Exposure to smoke can lead to a range of health issues, including sore eyes, tears, coughs, and a runny nose. It can also exacerbate existing heart and lung conditions such as asthma. More serious or long-lasting health concerns can arise from heavier smoke or prolonged exposure.

Manitobans are encouraged to take the following steps to safeguard their health during periods of poor air quality:

  • Limit outdoor activity, especially strenuous activities, and plan outdoor time for when conditions are less smoky.
  • Stay indoors with windows and doors closed, using fans to circulate air and keep rooms cool.
  • Set air-conditioning units to recirculate to prevent drawing smoke indoors, including in vehicles.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Use room air cleaners with HEPA filters if available.
  • Avoid smoking or burning other materials to keep indoor air clean.

Children, the elderly, individuals with chronic heart or lung conditions, and those who spend significant time outdoors are at the highest risk and should take precautions even when smoke conditions are light to moderate. Healthy individuals are advised to take precautions when smoke conditions are heavy. Individuals with heart or lung conditions should follow their health-care provider’s advice, ensure they have an adequate supply of medication, and monitor their condition closely.

Manitoba Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care continues to encourage Manitobans to regularly check local weather and air-quality conditions throughout the wildfire season. Further updates will be provided as necessary.
