IIU | WINNIPEG POLICE UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR INCIDENTS INVOLVING ARRESTS

Winnipeg Police Service officers are under investigation for two separate incidents that allegedly involve injuries to people they placed under arrest.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) says that two people have complained of being injured during arrest by Winnipeg Police officers.

The first incident took place February 7, 2016. It is alleged that a male sustained an injury to his arm as he was being handcuffed. After being released, he visited the Health Sciences Centre where he says he was informed his arm was sprained or dislocated. He has been off work since then due to the injury.  Winnipeg Police had been investigating but the IIU took over the case when it was determined that the injuries met the definition of “serious injury”.

The second incident happened October 4, 2016 when a man was being arrested for uttering threats. On October 17, 2016 he filed a complaint that alleges he required surgery to repair his hand after it was injured during the arrest. Under the legislation the IIU is mandated to investigate.
