City announces funding for foot patrols, litter and graffiti removal

The City of Winnipeg is injecting close to $200,000 into foot patrols and graffiti removal funding announced Mayor Brian Bowman on Tuesday, January 23, 2018.

The funding is earmarked to improve safety in the downtown core, the west end and the exchange district. The Bear Clan will also be expanded with funding from the city.

The three Biz organizations in and around downtown, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, the West End BIZ, and the Exchange District BIZ, will each receive $30,000 to enhance their safe walk and foot patrol programs

“The safety ambassador and foot patrol programs operated by these business improvement zones are a highly visible, well understood, and effective safety resource,” said Mayor Bowman. “As well, these safety patrols provide a critical link between residents and the police, are an invaluable resource in providing conflict resolution support, and are a reassuring presence for many residents.”

The Bear Clan will be getting just over $13,000 for radios, cellphones and an automated external defibrillator (AED) to help them expand into the west end.

Take Pride Winnipeg will be getting $90,000 in additional funding for their litter control, graffiti removal, the mural and Snow Angel programs.
