One new case identified as Manitoba set to loosen restrictions over COVID-19

Manitoba Public Health announced on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, that there is one new case of COVID-19 identified in the province. The total number of cases remains at 273

Currently, there are five people being treated for the virus in the hospital with no intensive care patients

213 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Manitoba with 54 cases remaining active.

The number of deaths related to the virus remains at 6 in Manitoba.

448 tests were performed on Tuesday, April 28th bringing the total number of lab-confirmed and probable tests performed since early February to 24,304

Testing criteria now includes all symptomatic Manitobans. Anyone showing symptoms still needs to be referred for testing by calling Health Links at 204-788-8200 or 1-888-315-9257.

Manitoba Chief Provincial Public Health Officer, Dr Brent Roussin released modelling used when deciding to loosen the restrictions around COVID-19 to allow the opening of some non-essential businesses.

Earlier Wednesday Premier Brian Pallister announced a multi-phase plan to get Manitoba’s economy back on track as the COVID-19 curve appears to be flattening in the province

Roussin says that had the province not implemented social distancing and travel restrictions when it did there could have been numbers three times higher today than they actually are and almost ten times higher by mid-may.

Projections show that by April 25 without restrictions there could have been 933 COVID -19 cases in the province. The actual numbers by that date were 267.

Data shows that had things progressed by May 22, 2020, those numbers would have grown to more than 2000 cases.

If the current public health measures remain in place for a year Manitoba could expect to see 6,250 cases of the virus.

Currently, the province has more than 977 acute care beds available for COVID-19 patients with planning underway to add 300 additional beds.

There are 86 adult intensive care bed in the province with 29 available for COVID-19 cases however an additional 100 intensive care beds are being planned for.

As the province begins to phase in the opening of the economy by permitting non-essential businesses to cautiously reopen they say they will be monitoring the number of COVID-19 cases and are prepared to respond to any outbreaks.
