The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating a November 11, 2019 police involved shooting on Academy Road in Winnipeg.
The incident occurred after a street supervisor noticed a stolen vehicle in the area of Pembina Highway and Point Road at about 6:10 pm. The 2004 Black Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland was reported stolen on Sunday, November 10, 2019, from the 200 block of Inkster Boulevard according to police records.
The officer along with another supervisor attempted to stop the stolen vehicle but the driver rammed both police units several times and got away. During the encounter one of the officers fire their weapon.
Police located the stolen vehicle abandoned a short time later in the lane beside Brock-Corydon School on Corydon Avenue. The black Jeep had crashed through the chain-link fence surrounding the school. Police could not locate the suspects.
The IIU was notified about the incident the same evening. As their investigation unfolded the IIU learned in January 2020, that one of the occupants in the stolen Jeep may have been injured as a result of the officer firing their weapon.
On November 18, 2020, investigators located the occupant and confirmed that they had been injured.
Since an injury caused by the discharge of a firearm is defined as a serious injury the IIU is mandated to investigate.
