Winnipeg Police were out in force in River Heights on Monday night, November 11, 2019, after a police-involved shooting.
Police say that a street supervisor noticed a stolen vehicle in the area of Pembina Highway and Point Road at about 6:10 pm. The 2004 Black Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland was reported stolen on Sunday, November 10, 2019, from the 200 block of Inkster Boulevard according to police records.
The officer, along with another street supervisor attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver of the stolen Jeep rammed both cruisers several times and got away. One of the officers fired their weapon during the incident. As the vehicle was fleeing the passenger leapt out and took off on foot.
People living in the area told News 4 that they saw officers running along Oak Street with guns drawn and were told to go inside their homes and lock their doors.
Police cordoned off a section of Academy Road between Ash Street and Elm Street.
Tire marks and debris could be seen on the ground beside a marked police supervisor unit inside the taped off area of Academy Road.
Officers guarding the scene on Academy were tight-lipped about what had happened but they did say that they were waiting for the Identification Unit to arrive and expected the road to be closed well into the morning hours.
Police located the stolen vehicle abandoned a short time later in the lane beside Brock-Corydon School on Corydon Avenue. The black Jeep had crashed through the chain-link fence surrounding the school.
One street over on Queenston Street officers were checking backyards for the driver of the SUV while AIR-1 circled above.
There is no word if police have anyone in custody.
Members of the Homicide Unit are investigating the incident. Police are asking anyone with information that can help them to call 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
