COVID-19 update for Thursday March 19, 2020

On Thursday March 19, 2020, Public Health officials announced that health-care facilities in the province will begin implementing enhanced precautions and protocols surrounding visitor restrictions.

27 additional ventilators will be put into operation across the province. Ventilators are used for critically ill patients. With these new units the province now has 266. 16 more ventilators have been ordered but have yet to arrive.

Health Sciences Centre will be moving a medicine unit into the former Women’s Pavillion. This will allow patients to be moved which will then allow for the space needed to create a 30-bed isolation unit.

Public Health has asked agencies that deliver day programs through Community Living disAbility Services for adults with intellectual disabilities to limit this service.

Services will be limited to individuals who live with family members who could lose their jobs if day services are not provided or who cannot be safely supported in their residence during daytime hours.

The province currently has nine testing sites for COVID-19 (4 in Winnipeg, Brandon, Thompson, Flin Flon, The Pas and a drive-thru in Selkirk). Two additional testing sites will open in the coming days. A Steinbach site will open on Friday March 20, 2020 in the Community Health Services Building on Reimer Avenue. An additional drive-thru testing site will open at the Manitoba Public Insurance Service Centre on Bison Drive in Winnipeg in the next few days.
