The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is reminding residents to secure permits
if they plan to set off fireworks for Halloween and Diwali on October 31.
To be eligible for a permit, residents must:
- Be 18 years or older.
- Have 100 feet of clearance from all buildings and trees (most private properties in Winnipeg do not meet this requirement).
- Have written consent of the property owner.
Residents planning to set off fireworks as part of a City park rental also need a fireworks permit.
These free permits, required for all consumer fireworks, are reviewed by the WFPS Fire Prevention
Branch. Permits can be applied for online. Residents setting off fireworks without a permit
may be fined up to $500.
WFPS also emphasizes several safety tips when setting off fireworks:
- Only adults 18 years or older should handle fireworks.
- Use only fireworks purchased in Canada that meet safety standards.
- Read all instructions, cautions, and warnings on each firework product.
- Always check wind direction and speed; set off fireworks with the wind blowing away from spectators and structures.
- Set up in a clear, open space and light fireworks on a hard, flat, and level surface.
- Have a bucket of sand, water supply, and a working fire extinguisher on hand.
- Never attempt to re-light a ‘dud’ or hold a lit firework.
- Dispose of fireworks safely and store unused ones in a closed container.
- Never use firecrackers, which are illegal in Canada.
