Brandon police officer knocked unconscious while escorting a suspect

Brandon Police say that a male who was already in their custody on unrelated charges will be charged with Assault Peace Officer and Mischief to Property and Resist Arrest following a struggle with police.

Around 11:00 pm on Thursday, June 11, 2020, police were escorting a male from Brandon Hospital to Police Headquarters. The male had been taken to the hospital after being arrested to be medically cleared before being put in a cell to detox.

As the male was being taken to the waiting police cruiser he began to resist and fell to the ground. Officers picked him up and walked him to the cruiser.

Once at the car the man lifted his feet and pushed off the side of the vehicle causing all three men to fall backwards. One of the officers struck his head on a concrete wall and was knocked unconscious.

The other officer struggled with the suspect and with the help of hospital security was able to get man into the back of the police cruiser.

Emergency medical help was called for the unconscious officer. He was treated in hospital and has now been released.

The police cruiser sustained significant denting of the door panel.
