A 34-year-old Calgary man is facing a number of charges after he was caught illegally transporting contraband cigarettes and cannabis.
In a joint investigation, Manitoba Finance’s Taxation Special Investigations Unit and the Ontario Ministry of Finance’s Compliance Branch stopped a semi heading westbound in Manitoba.
Investigators executed a search warrant on the vehicle and found 1,060,000 illegal cigarettes and 42 pounds of illegal cannabis.
Had the cigarettes been sold Manitoba stood to lose $318,000 in tax revenue.
The driver faces fines on top of his criminal charges that could reach as high $964,000. In Manitoba, those convicted in these types of crimes face penalties equal to triple the potential tax loss
