Gas leak prompts evacuation of Winnipeg Square and several other buildings

A contractor working on Fort Street inadvertently severed a natural gas line on Thursday afternoon, February 7, 2019 causing the evacuation of several buildings in the Portage Avenue and Main Street area.

Manitoba Hydro said that crews were able to stop the leak just after 1:30 pm and that repairs to the underground pipe are underway.

Two office towers have been evacuated. Buildings at 220 Portage and 360 Main have been cleared but emergency crews are conducting a floor by floor inspection to ensure no one remains in the buildings.

People are being asked to avoid the area.
