City of Winnipeg Councillor Russ Wyatt is facing charges for a serious sexual assault that happened at a home in the city and reported to police on January 14, 2018.
Police say the woman was not Wyatt’s spouce but that he knew the victim.
Wyatt was arrested last evening, Tuesday July 10, 2018, charged for his alleged involvement then released on a promise to appear.
Police say that the delay between the reporting of the crime and the arrest is normal because investigators have to wait for lab results after gathering evidence.
Wyatt was interviewed by memebrs of the Sex Crimes Unit shortly after the accusation. His arrest came on the same day investigators received results back from the lab.
Wyatt was first elected to city council in 2002. In January of this year he admitted himself into an addictions treatment facility in Gimli and returned to council in May. In June he came out pubically as a bisexual male during pride celebrations in the city.
