Manitoba is no longer in a state of emergency

The province wide state of emergency that has been in place for the past 19 months is set to expire today, October 21, 2021.

“Nineteen months ago we declared a state of emergency to help protect the physical and financial health and safety of all Manitobans and reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our hospitals and in our communities,” said Premier Kelvin Goertzen.“As we continue to move toward a post-pandemic Manitoba, we want to remind everyone, although the state of emergency is expiring, COVID-19 is still here.”

The state of emergency gave the government special powers under the Emergency Measure Act. Under the act the state of emergency was valid for 30 days and needed to be renewed each month. It was first implemented on March 20, 2020.

The province noted that current public health orders are still in effect and public health orders can continue to be issued under the Public Health Act without the need for a provincewide state of emergency.
