Officers cleared over in-custody death, says IIU

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has cleared the RCMP officers connected to an in-custody death in Selkirk.

On December 30, 2019 RCMP were called to a home in the RM of St. Andrews. One male was arrested and taken to the RCMP detachment in Selkirk.

Soon after arriving at the detachment the male went into medical distress and became unresponsive. Officers immediately performed CPR and called emergency medical services but the male did not recover and was pronounced dead.

An investigation was undertaken by the IIU as is mandated whenever there is an in-custody death.

Investigators determined that “no actions by any police officer caused or contributed to the cause of the affected person’s death.”
