Red River offers training to collect COVID-19 samples

Red River College has partnered with the Province of Manitoba to train students studying for a career in health care as well as those in related health care professions to safely perform a nasal swab to collect samples to test for COVID-19.

The course will provide participants with a “micro-credential” and can be completed in as little as five hours through a combination of online and and hands-on training.

Red River says the course is offered tuition free through Red River College’s School of Continuing Education.

Once completed students will be qualified to work at COVId-19 testing sites throughout Manitoba.

The course is offered to students in at least the second year of one of the following regulated health professions: Registered Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing and medical students and physician assistant students at the University of Manitoba.

Students taking an approved paramedicine or respiratory therapy program can also take the training as can those in the following professions:

  • health-care aides;
  • medical laboratory technologists;
  • occupational therapists;
  • physiotherapists; and
  • pharmacists.

People qualified to practice in one of the following regulated health professions in jurisdictions outside Manitoba or Canada (based on the presentation of valid credentials) can also take the course: registered nursing;  licensed practical nursing; psychiatric nursing; and medicine;

The college will train up to 30 students per week initially but will add capacity as required.
