Police investigating after incendiary causes Winnipeg hotel blaze

Winnipeg Police Service are investing a Friday afternoon fire at an airport hotel.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to an alarm at hotel in the 1800 block of Wellington Avenue after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting the blaze in one of the suites.

Due to the potential number of people in the structure a second alarm responded to the fire in order to increase the number of firefighter and equipment on scene.

The hotel’s automatic fire sprinkler system was able to keep the fire from moving beyond the original room. When fire crews arrived they encountered smoke in the first floor hallway and launched an offensive attack.

The fire was quickly put out and crews then worked to ventilate the building.

Fire officials say that parts of the hotel suffered minor smoke and water damage.

Although everyone was able to self-evacuate from the building one person was assessed by paramedics but did not need to be taken to hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Fire investigators believe the dire was caused by an incendiary.

The investigation continues
