The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating an incident after a suspect was allegedly injured during an arrest by RCMP in Portage la Prairie.

On September 20,2016 RCMP attempted to stop an erratic driver. The driver turned off the road and drove into a ditch where the three occupants of the vehicle and took off on foot. The RCMP officer caught one of the fleeing suspects and they both fell to the ground. The suspect was handcuffed and taken to the police vehicle when he complained of feeling unwell.

The suspect was taken to the detachment and examined by emergency medical services, then to Portage la Prairie hospital for x rays, where it was determined he had a broken right clavicle.

Because the suspect was considered to be seriously injured the IIU is required to investigate.
