HYDRO YARDS AND VEHICLES BROKEN INTO, ID & UNIFORMS STOLEN

Hydro warns customers to always check ID of workers who approach their homes

Over the weekend three Manitoba Hydro service yards were broken into and thieves made off with uniforms, a photo ID card and a notebook that may contain customer information.

The break-ins occurred on Dawson Road, Redwood Avenue and Pandora Avenue. Ten vehicles inside the yards had their windows smashed.

In a media release about the incident hydro stated “The notebooks contain handwritten notes for both residential and business customers citywide who had their natural gas meters exchanged. In a few cases, phone numbers and a first name to be used as a customer contact were also listed.”

Manitoba Hydro is reminding customers to always ask to see company identification from an Hydro employee who approach their home and to check to see if they came in a clearly marked Manitoba Hydro vehicle. If you are uncomfortable in any way hydro says to not allow the person in your yard or home and ask them to call and make an appointment for the work they need to perform.

The break-ins are concerning to Manitoba Hydro.“We are working closely with the Winnipeg Police Service as they perform their investigation,” said Scott Powell, Manitoba Hydro’s manager of Public Affairs.“We are also conducting our own internal review of this matter as our work procedures are designed to ensure that customer information or other sensitive materials are not left in vehicles during off hours,”
