Firefighter and two others injured during fires on Tuesday

A firefighter was injured early Tuesday morning, November 14, 2023, while battling a blaze in the 100 block of Maryland Street.

Crews were called to a two-and-a-half storey multi-family residence around 11:10 am and found smoke coming from the building when they arrived on the scene. The fire was declared under control within 30 minutes and was contained to the suite where it began.

A search of the building found a dog inside but no other occupants.

One firefighter suffered injuries but was assessed by paramedics at the scene and did not require hospitalization. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental and caused by a space heater left too close to combustibles.

Earlier in the morning a fire in the KeKiNan Assisted Living Centre on Robinson Street had emergency crews responding to a fire in the building.

Heavy black smoke greeted firefighters as they arrived. The fire was quickly contained and limited to a single suite.

On-scene paramedics assessed two people with one of them being taken to hospital in unstable condition.

Fire officials say that the fire appears to accidental caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials.
