Winnipeg Police Investigate Fatal Stabbing Incident

In the early hours of July 28, 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a serious assault in the first 100 block of Marlow Court. At approximately 3:55 a.m., North District General Patrol members arrived at the scene and discovered an adult male with severe injuries consistent with being stabbed.

Emergency medical personnel provided immediate care, and the injured male was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Despite their efforts, he was later pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified as 36-year-old Kennedy Maxwell Elk, a member of the Dakota Tipi First Nation who was residing in Winnipeg.

The Homicide Unit was promptly notified and took over the investigation. Later that morning, at around 9:00 a.m., Tactical Support Team members apprehended an adult male at a hotel in the 2500 block of Portage Avenue. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Ryan Sage Meeches, has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder and remains in custody.

The Winnipeg Police Service is urging anyone with information regarding the incident, including video surveillance, to contact investigators at 204-986-6508 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to uncover the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing.
