Syrnyk now living in Winnipeg
For eight years Winnipeg endured a rash of armed robberies every Christmas season. Between 1994 and 2002 Michael Syrnyk robbed dozens of Winnipeg businesses including an infamous robbery at Polo Park Mall where gun shots were exchanged. In one incident he also shot at and hit a Winnipeg Police Officer.
Syrnyk was arrested in 2002 after he took a woman hostage but she was able to use her cell to call 911. He was convicted of 35 counts including 21 armed robberies as well as weapons related offences. His sentence was 17 years for the robberies plus an additional 6 years for the weapons charges.
On Friday April 21, 2017 Syrnyk was released from prison after serving two thirds of his sentence. He in now living in a Winnipeg half-way house where he will be monitored and be required to report to a parole officer. Syrnyk will be on parole until 2023 when his sentence ends.
