Youth charged in weekend rollover near Headingley for stealing vehicle

On Sunday, September 17, 2017, a crash and rollover occurred on Highway one just West of Headingley. Two youth were injured in the crash with one being airlifted to hospital the other sent by ground. Both victims were suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.

 

 

Details surrounding the crash were limited at the time but on Monday Brandon Police Service told media that the crash involved a stolen vehicle that had been taken from a childcare residence in the Wheat city.

Just after 11:30 am on Sunday an employee of the childcare residence called police to report that two of the residents, an 11-year-old male and a 14-year-old male had stolen a blue Volkswagen Jetta that belonged to the organization. Police learned that the car was travelling towards Winnipeg. Brandon Police contacted the RCMP who located and pursued the vehicle. The pursuit ended when the vehicle rolled over west of Headingley.

On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, Brandon Police arrested the 14-year-old male and charged him with theft of a motor vehicle in relation to the incident. The 11-year-old male was not charged with a crime due to his age. The 14-year-old will face the charges when he appears in court in October.
