A driver going the wrong way caught patrol officers attention early Sunday morning, June 23, 2019.
Police say that they spotted vehicle travelling westbound on York Ave near Fort Street. The vehicle then turned onto Fort and was stopped by officers near Graham Avenue.
When the driver, who turned out to be 15, was asked for his licence and registration he couldn’t provide them. He also provided a false name to officers.
The driver and the four other occupants of the vehicle were placed under arrest as the investigation unfolded.
A search of the vehicle resulted in police seizing a .22 calibre handgun, along with a magazine containing 9 rounds. Police also found a small amount of crack cocaine and nearly $2,000 in cash. A knife was also found on the underage driver.
The 15-year-old male from Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with:
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking Cocaine
- Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of a Firearm, Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Obtained by Crime
- Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
- Possession of a Weapon
- Public Mischief
- Drive without a licence or with invalid licence (Highway Traffic Act)- Disobey traffic control device (Highway Traffic Act)
- As a driver, fail to produce a driver’s license and/or insurance certificate and registration card (Highway Traffic Act)
The youth also had two existing arrest warrants that he was also process on for Fail to Comply with Sentence.
Three other 18-year-old males and a 19-year-old male are facing charges of:
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking Cocaine
- Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Possession of a Firearm, Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Obtained by Crime
All five suspects were detained in custody.
