8 deaths at Maples PCH prompt deployment of Rapid Response Team

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority held a media briefing on Saturday, November 7, 2020 to explain what occurred that required multiple 911 calls for Emergency Medical Services Friday night at Maples personal care home.

Gina Trinidad, chief operating officer of long-term care for the WRHA said that nursing staff assessed the health care needs of twelve residents and called in paramedics just after 7:00 pm

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews assessed a total of 12 residents of which three were transported to the hospital. Two of the residents who were already being treated for end of life issues passed away between the time paramedics were called in and when they arrived The remaining residents were treated within Maples PCH.

There have been eight deaths at the facility in the last 24-48 hours noted Trinidad.

According to Jason Chester, vice-president, long-term care operations for Western Canada, Revera, one of the patients who passed away had tested positive for COVID-19 but the other had not.

“There are no plans, at this point in time, to take over Maples personal care home,” said Trinidad.

Trinidad did announce that a Rapid Response Team made up of community paramedics will be on site at the PCH as of today to provided enhanced monitoring and assessment of residents.

Beginning Friday, November 13, members from the Canadian Red Cross will be working alongside staff at the facility.

Health Minister Cameron Friesen ordered WRHA officials to explain to Manitobans what had happened at Maples personal care home after meeting with them earlier in the day.

The health minister is slated to hold a media briefing on Sunday, November 8, at 11:30 am to discuss the situation at Maples personal care home.

Maples Personal care home is the site of an outbreak of COVID- 19 that has claimed 22 lives, including three announced today.

There are 176 confirmed cases linked to the outbreak including 55 staff members. The capacity of the PCH is 200 residents according to Revera.
