Winnipeg cop facing assault charges, says IIU

A Winnipeg Police Service officer is facing charges after he allegedly assaulted an erratic driver in June of 2018.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba began an investigation after a 36-year-old male suffered a serous injury during his arrest.

According to the IIU police were following a vehicle that was being driven erratically throughout the city. The vehicle was stopped on Portage Avenue near the Perimeter Highway. Police forcefully removed the driver from the vehicle after he became uncooperative.

The suspect complained of injuries and was taken to hospital where medical personnel discovered he had suffered a fracture to his right orbital bone.

After an extensive investigation it was determined by the IIU that there are reasonable and probable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred.

Winnipeg Police Constable Dustin Rodneck has been charged for his alleged involvement and will face the charges in court in August.
