IIU clears off-duty officer in boating accident

A Winnipeg Police officer will not face any charges in relation to a boating accident that happened on August 3, 2019.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) began an investigation into the actions of the officer after a child was injured while being towed behind a sea-doo in the lake at Lac du Bonnet.

Investigators say that while the officer was towing an inner tube with three kids on board behind the watercraft a boat came between the sea-doo and the inner tube. The tow rope got entangled with the boat’s propeller and an 8-year-old child received an injury to their head requiring 8 stitches.

IIU investigators talked to those involved as well as two witnesses who were nearby at the time of the accident. Significant discrepancies were identified between the statement of the boater and the others interviewed.

Civilian Director Zane Tessler concluded that the boater was trying to deflect responsibility for the accident onto the officer. It was concluded that the officer’s actions did not contravene any regulations for towing on the water.

RCMP are continuing to investigate the boater’s conduct and responsibility for the accident.
