Off-duty Winnipeg Police officer arrested after man dies in vehicle / pedestrian collision

Winnipeg Police have arrested one of their own Tuesday night after he was involved in a serious motor vehicle collision with a pedestrian at Main Street and Sutherland Avenue.

Police say the collision happened just after 8:00 pm on October 10, 2017. An adult male, who has been identified as 23-year-old Cody Severight, was crossing Main Street and was struck by a vehicle that left the scene. He was taken to hospital in critical condition but died shortly afterwards due to the injuries he sustained in the collision.

Investigators have arrested an off-duty Winnipeg Police Services officer. Constable Justin Holz, 34 was arrested and charged with Drive While Ability Impaired Causing Death and Failure to Stop at the Scene of Accident Involving Death for his alleged involvement. He has been released on a Promise to Appear in court.

Holtz has been a member of the Winnipeg Police Service for the past 8 years and was currently assigned as a Criminal Investigator.

 

The Independent Investigations Unit of Manitoba (IIU) was contacted immediately and have taken control of the investigation.

Winnipeg Police Central Traffic Collision Investigation Unit are assisting under the direction of the IIU.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents causing death or serious injury by on or off-duty police officers in Manitoba.
