Winnipeg Police officers won’t be facing any charges after a suspect was injured after an arrest outside Siloam Mission last summer.
Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says that although the officers did apply force to arrest the man it was necessary and not excessive.
The conclusion was determined after IIU investigators spoke with a number of witnesses including five staff members at Siloam Mission. IIU also interviewed the doctor at HSC who treated the injured man and learned it was possible that the man had suffered his injuries prior to any interaction with the officers.
The investigation stemmed from an August 8, 2018 incident. Police were called to a disturbance outside Siloam Mission on Stanley Street. The male was agitated, aggressive and would not obey commands from police. The male struggled with officers. Peppers spray was deployed followed by a taser in an effort to subdue him. Once in custody, the man was taken to Health Sciences Centre where doctors sedated him due to his continued agitated state. The man had suffered a collapsed lung and three fractured ribs.
The IIU was mandated to investigate the incident because the male had suffered an internal injury.
