The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has cleared a Winnipeg Police officer after a 14-year-old girl was injured during an arrest last September.
The IIU says that on September 2, 2017, police located a stolen car being driven erratically in the area of Magnus Avenue and Charles Street.
Officers stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver and one of the occupants but a female youth bolted from the vehicle. Police gave chase and when the girl refused to stop the officer pushed the girl from behind causing her to fall and sustain a broken left clavicle.
The incident was reported to the IIU and the civilian director made a decision to investigate because it was in the public interest even though it was not considered a serious injury as defined by the regulations that govern the IIU.
An investigation determined that the officer had a clear duty to apprehend the girl and that under the circumstances his actions were reasonable and appropriate.
