Woman Succumbs to Injuries, Suspect Charged with Manslaughter

A late-night incident on June 23, 2024, has ended in tragedy. At approximately 12:30 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a distress call from the 500 block of Balmoral Street, where they found an adult female with life-threatening injuries.

The victim was immediately transported to the hospital in critical condition but she later succumbed to her injuries.

The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Norma Jean Sumner, a member of the Dauphin River First Nation who had recently moved to Winnipeg. The family has been notified of the tragic incident.

The Homicide Unit took over the investigation, which revealed that the victim and the suspect were not acquainted before the incident, which escalated into a physical altercation.

The investigation led to the identification of the suspect. On July 3, 2024, members of the North District General Patrol arrested the suspect, who was found walking in the 200 block of Salter Street. He was subsequently handed over to the Homicide Unit for further processing.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Kyle Byron STRAIGHT, has been charged with Manslaughter. He is currently detained in custody.
