A 31-year-old woman is facing robbery and weapon charges after she robbed a restaurant and then carjacked a taxi.
Around 3:00 am on Sunday, January 22, 2023, police were called to the area of River Avenue and Osborne Street for the report of a carjacking.
Officers learned that shortly before the carjacking the suspect had gone into a restaurant in the 100 block of Osborne Street and while brandishing a firecracker demanded food. When employees refused her demand she set off the firecracker, grabbed a pizza and fled the restaurant.
The accused tried to get a ride from a taxi but was asked to leave the car when she became belligerent with the driver. As the driver exited the vehicle the suspect jumped behind the wheel and drove off dragging the driver for about 10 metres. The driver suffered upper body injuries and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Officers responding to the carjacking spotted the stolen vehicle near Ellice Avenue and Young Street and followed it until it got stuck in a snowbank in the back lane in the 600 block of Balmoral Street. The suspect fled the vehicle but was quickly arrested by officers. During her arrest, she became uncooperative and combative with officers.
Ansley Ginell Henderson has been charged for her alleged involvement with two counts of Robbery, Possession of a Weapon, two counts of Fail to Comply with Condition of Release and Fail to Comply with Condition of Undertaking.
Henderson was detained in custody.
Police continue to investigate.
