Woman receives two tickets for ignoring public health orders

A 25-year-old Thompson woman did not get the message after RCMP issued her a $1,296 fine for breaching COVID-19 restrictions on Saturday night, April 16, 2021.

Police say that they were called to an apartment complex on Cree Road in Thompson around 11:30 pm after they received a report of a party. As officers arrived they could hear loud music coming from the suite. As officers were talking to the resident they observed a large group of people inside. The female was charged with Failing to Comply with a Public Health Order and fined. The people in the apartment were asked to leave by the officers. No one else was fined.

Less than 24 hours later police received a report that another large gathering was occurring in the same apartment. Officers went to the apartment and confirmed there were a number of people inside. The female who officers had fined the night before was issued a second $1,296 ticket for Failing to Comply with a Public Health Order.

Between April 12 and April 18, 2021, Manitoba enforcement officers issued 121 warnings and 21 tickets violating public health orders. 14 $1,296 tickets were issued to individuals of which eight were related to gatherings. Four $5,000 tickets were issued to businesses and Three $5,150 tickets were issued to individuals under the federal quarantine act.

The province noted that travellers arriving at the Winnipeg International Airport are being told about Manitoba’s self-isolation requirements.

Manitoba currently has a requirement that anyone entering the province, including returning residents, must self-isolate for 14 days.
