IIU – “In public interest for the agency to investigate”
Manitoba’s police watchdog agency the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into what happened to an 18-year-old female during her processing after her arrest that resulted in her getting injured.
On August 18, 2017, the IIU received word from Winnipeg Police that they had arrested the female in the Norwood area of the city on an outstanding warrant. As she was being processed at the East District police station she became aggressive. Officers used force to control her.

The woman later complained of a sore shoulder so she was taken to St. Boniface Hospital for treatment. Her injury was X-rayed and it showed the woman had a fractured left collarbone.
Doctors treated the woman and she was released and taken to the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
IIU civilian director, Zane Tessler has determined that the IIU will investigate the case because it is in the public interest to do so.
