A 32-year-old woman is facing charges after she allegedly attacked three people and threatened a fourth with a hammer.
On Monday, December 19, 2022, officers patrolling in the St. Matthews Avenue and Maryland Street area spotted a fight between a female suspect armed with a hammer and a 43-year-old female victim. Officers ordered the suspect to drop the hammer and placed her into custody. Police seized the hammer and a knife that the accused had in her possession.
Officers learned that the accused approached the victim and requested a cigarette. She then proceeded to assault the victim in the upper body before stealing her purse. A struggle ensued at which point the suspect brandished a hammer towards the victim. A male in his mid-fifties and a 34-year-old female tried to help the victim but were assaulted by the suspect. The male was hit with the hammer and the female was assaulted in the upper body.
Investigators learned that earlier in the day the same suspect was caught allegedly stealing merchandise from a Portage Avenue business. When a 27-year-old male employee tried to stop her the suspect brandished the hammer at him before fleeing on foot.
None of the victims suffered any notable injuries and none required medical attention.
