A series of attempted robberies unfolded on the 3600 block of Portage Avenue yesterday afternoon, leading to the arrest of a 30-year-old woman. The Winnipeg Police Service responded to the scene at approximately 1:36 p.m.
Police say the suspect, identified as Alexis Abby Hunter of Winnipeg, first targeted a local bank. Brandishing a knife, she attempted to steal money from a teller who was in the process of dispensing funds to a customer. Her attempt was unsuccessful, and she fled the scene on foot prior to the arrival of the police.
Approximately 14 minutes later, officers were directed to a retail store in the same block. They apprehended Hunter without incident. A knife and a pair of runners, later confirmed to have been stolen, were found on her person and seized as evidence.
According to investigators, after fleeing the bank, Hunter had entered a hair salon in the same block. Still armed with the knife, she attempted to steal a cash register. When staff intervened, she attempted to stab one of them and shoved her to the ground before fleeing the salon empty-handed. The 44-year-old female staff member sustained minor injuries but did not require medical attention.
Hunter then proceeded to a nearby clothing retail store, where she stole a pair of runners valued at approximately $100. She fled to a fourth business, where she was ultimately apprehended by the police.
Hunter has been charged for her alleged involvement with two counts of Robbery and Theft Under $5,000. She is currently being held in custody.
