Winnipeg has released the results of its lead water quality testing program and say for most residents the water is safe.
Results show that 20% of those with lead pipes show lead levels above the national guideline. Residents with lead pipes are encouraged to run their water to flush the system before consuming.
268 homes participated in the testing program between August and November. During the tests, four water samples were taken from each home. A random daytime sample (no flushing) the three more samples after the tap had been run for 1,2 and five minutes.
Testing of Shoal Lake, Winnipeg’s water source, showed no detectable lead in our water. Winnipeg’s water is therefore still considered safe under the new national guidelines.
