Winnipeg Unveils Ambitious Transportation Master Plan

The city of Winnipeg has released the final draft of its much-anticipated transportation master plan, “TRANSPORTATION 2050: Reimagining Mobility”. The comprehensive strategic plan is a call to action for Winnipeggers to rethink their understanding of mobility and embrace a shift towards sustainability, economic growth, and safe, accessible travel for all.

Councillor Janice Lukes, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works, emphasized the need for change. “Winnipeg is changing and we need transportation to change with it,” she said. “This plan lays the groundwork for our transportation system to support economic growth, the environment, and Winnipeggers’ ability to move around the city safely and efficiently using whatever mode they choose.”

The draft plan sets ambitious targets for reimagined mobility, recommends policies to support success, and proposes an action plan to achieve a 50 percent mode shift by 2050. “Undertaking master plans like this require us to balance the needs of many different stakeholders and types of road users,” Lukes added. “This plan won’t completely satisfy anyone, but absolutely has something for everyone.”

The next step for the plan is to help Winnipeggers understand what it could mean for them. The city is inviting residents to learn more by reviewing the “Guide to TRANSPORTATION 2050”, downloading the larger policy document, and taking a deep dive into one of the two draft subsidiary plans moving forward to Council with TRANSPORTATION 2050.

Residents are also invited to join one of six public pop-up events between now and July 26 to talk to the project team, ask questions, and share their thoughts on the plan. A telephone town hall is scheduled for July 24, where thousands of Winnipeggers will be on the line to hear about the plan, ask questions, and learn what others think.

Following this public information period, the plan and an accompanying administrative report will be finalized and presented to Council for consideration in Fall 2024.
