Winnipeg under a severe thunderstorm watch, tornado warning for Rm of Rockwood

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch on Saturday evening, July 9, 2022, for the City of Winnipeg and surrounding areas.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop this evening as an unstable airmass move in ahead of a frontal system.

According to the national forecaster conditions have become favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms. Golfball sized hail and strong winds are possible.

At 6:47 pm Environment Canada issued a report that a minor rotation had been seen on this storm northeast of Winnipeg and it is slowly tracking east, southeast.

In rare cases minor rotation can produce a tornado.

A tornado warning has been issued for the R.M. of Rockwood incl. Teulon Stonewall and Stony Mountain.

“Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately,” said Environment Canada in their warning.
