Winnipeg Transit to pilot new On-Request service

Winnipeg Transit is spending $140,000 on a pilot project for on-request transit service.

Beginning August 12, 2021 the On-Request transit service pilot project will allow passengers in three areas of the city to book rides using a mobile app.

The Winnipeg Transit On-Request mobile app can plan bus routes in real-time and respond immediately to passengers’ trip requests, says the city. Once a trip is requested the app will provide walking instructions to the pick-up location, provide an approximate pick-up time and a total trip time and once dropped off provide walking directions to their final destination.

“I’m pleased to see the On-Request Transit service pilot project being implemented so quickly after the 2021 Balanced Budget Update,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Across our country, all transit services grapple with how to supply the most accurate service to meet the unpredictable changes in demand. This pilot project will use innovative software to address those unpredictable changes in demand in a way that has seen success in cities across Canada.”

The app is expected to be available for download on Bothe the apple and Google Play stores on August 6, 2021.
